October 1998 CattleWoman
Delores has been married to husband John for 52 years. She says: "Weve just sold our place and are looking to move east of the Cascades where we will be back in the cattle business full time. Our youngest daughter has had most of the cows leased, but now the cows are back in Oregon and our daughter will come back and be in with us. We raise Shire draft horses and Shire-thoroughbred cross for ranch, sport, or jumping. We have a Shire stallion and a Thoroughbred one too. I get to gentle the babies, of which there are only four this year. We try to sell them as yearlings and 2 yr. olds. In my spare time I like to travel. I spent over two weeks in Australia in May. I went with two other ag-oriented ladies and we stayed with three different families we had met before. We rented a motorhome and drove from Adelaide to Alice Springs with side trips to Ayres Rock, the Olgas and Idracoura Cattle Station. In September of 97 I went to England and Scotland on a tour with my sister. I now know how livestock feels being herded around. We did see Stonehenge. Ive been to the Stonehenge in Washington State and wanted to see the original. About the first thing I saw on English soil was tansy ragwort. Also lots of Holsteins; very few beef cattle are raised in the area we were in. We arrived just two days after Dianas funeral, so we saw flowers everywhere. I keep busy with Cattlewomen, Oregon Women for Ag and Farm Bureau. And somewhere in there Im trying to sort and pack and clean. We have three daughters, 8 grandkids (5 girls, 3 boys) and 4 great-grandkids (3 girls, 1 boy). They live from Alliance, NE to Riverside, CA to Pendleton and Mt. Vernon, OR to Portland and then Chehalis, WA. That gives me places to go, also." Delores closes with what seems to
be her motto: "Life is never dull!" |
