September 1998 CattleWoman
Jeanette Knott

Jeanette writes "I was
privileged to be OCW president for the National Beef Cook-Off, which we held in Oregon in
1989. I was also the Events chairman responsible for the Opening Reception, the Barbecue
at the Coleman Ranch and the Awards Banquet. We had 920 registered for the NBCO, it was
the largest since its inception.
We started the "Where in the
World Have You Eaten Today" program in the Portland schools, and then took it
statewide. With the help of the Oregon Beef Council, we purchased for each county a
program from the Minnesota CattleWomen called "Growing in the Country". We
started the ground work for the Beef Ambassador program and a safety program for rural
children: "McGruff is a Cow Dog Too".I was National Beef for
Fathers Day Chairman, and we had the largest and most diversified promotions in the
nation. We did full page Photo Contests ads, in-store demos, school essay and poster
contests and radio trivia games. Each county participated in some way. We did two highly
successful projects with the Oregon Beef Council, the Great Northwest Chili Cook-Off,
which raised $13,000 for the Portland Zoo, and our Junior Beef Cook-Off. We updated
bylaws, organization charts, and restructured committees and manuals.
Our motto was: "If it is to
be, it is up to me."
